Appropriate surgical margins for excision of squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip

Objective Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignancy on lower lip. Surgical excision, standard treatment for SCC, requires full-thickness excision. However, no consensus exists about appropriate surgical margin. Therefore, we investigated margin and excision technique by analyzing 23 years of experience with lower-lip SCC. Methods We reviewed 44 patients SCC who underwent surgery from November 1997 to October 2020. Frozen biopsy was performed an left right sides lesion, below lesion skin above sulcus boundary. If frozen result positive, additional session secure a negative Full-thickness until final In each patient, total number sessions performed, margin, recurrence were analyzed. Results Forty-one cases ended in first session, 2 second 1 third session. The margins (left right; n=88) 5 mm (66%), 7 (9%), 8 (2.3%), 10 (20.4%), 15 (2.3%). During average follow-up 67.4 months (range, 12-227 months), occurred one patient. Conclusion 66% (58/88) cases, 97.7% (86/88) within mm. set mm, suggest that 5-mm when results are positive
